Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I choose a roofing contractor?

Look for a licensed and insured contractor with extensive experience in your area or an area with similar characteristics. Here in Philadelphia, like most major cities, the majority of roofs are flat and you will need a contractor that is familiar with the ins and outs of all weather flat roof.  These roofs have no natural pitch like the pitch found in A-frame homes. Flat roofs are often more difficult to work with and neglecting to care for them properly can cause ponding and major issues to your home. Flat roofs need the care and attention to detail that only a skilled Master Roofer can provide.

  • How often does a roof need maintenance?

Typically, it is best to get maintenance done every 4-5 years. Other factors can contribute to the frequency of maintenance required. After a roof is replaced having some maintenance done every few years will keep the roof and the warranty intact.

  • Do I need to replace my entire roof if it is leaking?

Not necessarily. Leaks can result from flashings that have come loose or a section of the roof system being damaged. A complete roof system failure, however, is generally irreversible and often a result of improper installation or incorrect material choice.

  • What are my options if I decide to replace my roof?

There are two basic options: you can either choose a complete replacement of the roof system, involving tearing off your existing roof system, or recover  the existing roof system, involving only the installation of a new roof system overlaying your existing roof.

  • Can I do the work my roof needs by myself?

Most work should not be done yourself. Professional roofing contractors are trained to safely and efficiently repair or replace roof systems. You can damage your roof system by using improper roofing techniques and severely injure yourself by falling off or through the roof.

  • How long can I expect my roof system to last?

Most new roof systems are designed to provide useful service for about 10-20 years. Actual roof system life span is determined by a number of factors, including local climate and environmental conditions, proper building and roof system design, material quality and suitability, proper application and adequate roof maintenance. Roofing product manufacturers offer a variety of warranties on their products. Take a close look at those warranties to see what responsibilities and financial obligations manufacturers will assume if their products fail to reach their expected lives

  • How much does a new roof cost?

Many factors go into determining the cost of your new roof. From square footage to accessibility a professional roofing contractor will determine the cost specific to your personal roof.

You should not choose a contractor based on price alone. Price is a factor, but not the only factor you should consider. Quality roofing material and contractor workmanship have value. Hiring the cheapest roofing contractor could cost more in the long run when you consider the cost to repair subpar roofing and the damage it causes.
